Sodium Bicarbonate and Its Effects on Chronic Kidney Diseases

Sodium bicarbonate or usually know as baking soda is more than just a normal kitchen ingredient. Many studies have shown that patients receiving small doses of Sodium Bicarbonate every day show a decrease in the growth of chronic kidney diseases. Though the short term results look promising, long term effects of sodium bicarbonate cannot be trusted. According to medical researchers, a long-term utilization of sodium bicarbonate has adverse effects on chronic kidney disease patients. Except sodium bicarbonate; chronic kidney disease treatment can forestall the progression of kidney damage by inducing diet, exercise and necessary lifestyle modifications.

Can sodium bicarbonate slow down chronic kidney disease?

Sodium bicarbonate or generally known as Baking soda has shown positive effects on Chronic kidney disease victims. The function of our kidneys is to extract impurities and essential nutrients from the blood and flush out the impurities through urine. Kidneys help maintain a balance between acid and base levels also known as PH levels in the body, the normal volume of Ph level in a human body is 7.4, and any measurement more than that can be a sign of kidney infection or Chronic kidney disease.

Case studies have revealed that the patients, who were given sodium Bicarbonate in their diet regularly, had a slower growth rate of the disease but the long term effects of the treatment are doubtful.

Signs of Chronic Kidney disease:

Chronic kidney disease worsens over time and consequently leads to kidney failure in most of the cases, unless and until diagnosed early. In the early stages (there are 5 stages of chronic kidney disease) you may not notice any symptoms as the disease is still in a progressing stage, but as CKD attains advanced stages, following symptoms can be noticed:

•    Itching
•    Swelling in legs, hands and face
•    Not feeling hungry
•    Irregular urine cycle
•    Trouble breathing & sleeping

The sure way to know whether you have kidney damage is by getting a blood test, if you are facing these symptoms then it is vital to consult a doctor. Treatment for CKD usually leads up to dialysis or Kidney transplant but multiple complications revolve around these treatments of which most people are not aware of. Chronic Kidney Disease Treatment in Ayurveda is considered as the best and an apt option for patients close to kidney failure. Ayurvedic treatment focuses on healing the disease by focusing on root cause instead of just attacking the symptoms.

Benefits of sodium bicarbonate:

Regular intake of Sodium Bicarbonate also known as baking soda can dramatically slow down the progression in Chronic Kidney Disease even allowing the patients to live without dialysis. Few reports have shown that people who were given sodium bicarbonate for a year showed only 60% less decline in kidney functions that those who were given usual treatments. There are no long term benefits of oral sodium bicarbonate intake as various complications revolve around the therapy.

People suffering from the disease usually go ahead with an allopathic treatment in which they are recommended for small doses of sodium bicarbonate as a part of their diet. It helps the kidneys to maintain a balance between acid and bases, for stable metabolic acidosis.

There are 5 stages in a total of Chronic Kidney disease and are classified based on GFR (Glomerular Filtration Rate). According to many researches, an oral intake of sodium bicarbonate is quite capable as it showed a slower decline in GFR rate and less muscle weakness.

Other factors that can decelerate kidney damage:

Sodium bicarbonate surely has effects that can help a person suffering from chronic kidney survive longer and delay kidney failure. But some studies have shown that there are other factors too that can slow down the progression of CKD like a monitored diet and regular exercise.

Medical researchers placed people with stage 4 chronic kidney disease diet  which is rich in fruits and vegetables, and marked a decrease in metabolic acidosis (a condition in which body produce extra quantity of acids), the results were long-lasting and there were no visible side effects, though the results were not as promising as of Sodium Bicarbonate’s, but given some concerns regarding the long-lasting effects of Bicarbonate, fruits and veggies can be considered as an optimum solution for those undergoing CKD.

Almost all treatment regarding CKD has one complication or another but Chronic Kidney Disease Treatment in Ayurveda poses no such effects. Ayurvedic kidney treatment even helped people close to kidney failure and prevented them from dialysis or kidney transplant.

Alternate treatment for Chronic kidney disease

Almost 1.5 billion people all around the world are facing Chronic Kidney disease and the treatments are limited. The most common treatment for chronic kidney disease is either dialysis or kidney transplant. Both the treatments are time-consuming as well as expensive.

CKD Treatment in Ayurveda is an alternative treatment that has been proven effective and highly successful over time. Ayurvedic kidney disease treatment aims towards eliminating the disease right from the core. The treatment procedure includes healing herbs infused with natural medical science with a blend of diet and regular exercise.
