Diet and Lifestyle Changes with PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease)



PKD or Polycystic Kidney Disease is a genetic disorder inherited from parent/s that affects the functionality of kidneys. The renal tubules become abnormal which leads to the growth of cysts within the kidney.  It can be affected by numerous reasons; excessive intake of drugs, alcohol or the wrong food type. Where the doctors (sometimes) refuse to reconstruct the functioning of kidneys with simple medications, they opt for renal transplant or dialysis. Types of Polycystic Kidney Disease:


Type #1 Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease: 

Autosomal Dominant Kidney Disease (ADPKD) is a disease inherited from one generation to another. It has been evident between the age groups from 30-40 though it can be diagnosed at childhood also.

Type #2 Infantile or Autosomal Recessive Polycystic Kidney Disease:

Infantile or Autosomal Recessive Kidney Disorder (ARPKD) is a disease inherited from both the parents. It can be diagnosed even in the womb. A fetus that is affected by ARPKD may have fluid filled like cysts which can make the kidneys look larger than the normal size. The fetus that survives the birth stage is likely to survive the adulthood with regular treatments. 


Symptoms:

Although it will not be easy to diagnose Polycystic Kidney Disease until the cyst grows by or above 0.5. But when it does; you may find the following symptoms:

• Your heart beats feebly or chest pain
• High blood pressure
• Backache or pain on your sides
• Increased size of abdomen
• Continual kidney infections
• Change in the color of urine
• Foamy urine
• Blood in urine

Practice #1: Dincharya (Daily routine)

• Get up at least 1 hour before the sunrise
• Malotsarg (urinate and excrete): Never put force to excrete the vegavidharan (suppression) can make you fall into unexpected diseases. 
• Brush your teeth with a stick of neem (azadirachta indica) it will make your teeth whiter, brighter and stronger. 
• Abhyanga (oleation): Apply til oil (sesame oil) on your skin, boost up the blood circulation and prevents the numbness caused due to Diabetes.
• Vayama (Exercise): Exercise daily.
• Snana (Bath): After exercising have a bath.
• Bhojan (food): Have a diet (mentioned below) filled with energy and nutrients.
• Do the tasks you usually do for living.
• Nindra (Sleep): After performing your Dincharya go for a sleep. 


Bhojan (Diet) of a PKD patient should be:

• Avocados are a big no! Avocados are the good source of potassium which is not good when you have a Polycystic Kidney Disease.
• Frozen/Canned Foods contains sodium as preservatives which are harmful for a PKD patient. 
• Avoid soft drinks and alcohol; it contains phosphorus which is easily absorbed by human bodies. 
• Avoid brown rice they are rich in potassium and phosphorus. Brown rice has more potassium and phosphorus compared to white rice.
• Dairy products are good source of potassium, phosphorus and protein. 
• Bananas & Oranges: They both are rich in potassium. Try apples, grapes, cranberries and their juices.
• Pickles & Processed Olives: They are high in sodium which should be avoided during the PKD ayurvedic treatment.
• Drink Liquids: Drink water & juices (which don’t contain potassium, sodium & phosphorus) and observe the color of the urine.


Practice #2: Ritucharya


Ayurveda emphasize on change of dincharya according to the ritu (seasons). It is known as Ritucharya. It helps in maintaining health during the changing of seasons.

During summers:

• Drink plenty of water
• Eat light food and avoid frozen, processed, spicy, potassium, sodium & phosphorus rich food.
• Avoid sleeping during daytime
• Wear light colors

During winters:

• Eat staples and moderate amount of protein 
• Massage with mustard oil
• Avoid cold food
• Apply ghee & honey on your cracked lips and naval as it keeps the digestion strong
• Exercise often


Practice #3 Sadvritta (good conduct):

• Sadvritta is basic manners in general. Keeping you calm & composed, optimistic, exercise, brisk walking, perform household works is Sadvritta. Also avoid alcohol & Smoking.
