What Foods Should Be Avoided If The Creatinine Level Is High?

In this blog, we have provided you with information about what foods should be avoided if the creatinine level is high. All patients have different dietary needs, so before adding or eliminating anything to/from your diet, consult your doctor.

A few primary functions of the kidneys that relate to the diet include:

  • Elimination of the waste products
  • Controlling extra fluid retention in the body
  • Producing necessary hormones
  • Assisting other organs in working well

When we eat food, our body uses what is vital, and the left is converted into waste products which can be eliminated through the urine. When the kidneys are not working the way they should, these waste materials accumulate in the blood and cause problems like high creatinine, protein loss, kidney infection, weakness, and many more.

It is vital for everyone to maintain a healthy diet not just to showcase a healthy and fit from outside, but also from inside. There are two common reasons behind kidney related problems; the first is high blood pressure, and the second is high blood sugar level. That is the reason why we should stop including the food items in our dietary plan that may cause us high creatinine level and kidney disease eventually.

What foods should be avoided if the creatinine level is high?

First, let us take a look at the supplements kidney patients should avoid consuming. These below listed substances can put pressure on the already harmed kidneys.

  • Salt or sodium – It is a necessary aspect of dietary treatment at every stage of kidney disorders. High intake or usage of salt in your meal can increase the level of sodium in the blood that causes high blood pressure and fluid retention. If your creatinine level is persistently increasing and your blood pressure is uncontrollable, then do go for a checkup and avoid salt-rich foods.
  • Phosphate – Calcium and phosphate work hand in hand to keep the health of your bones, teeth, and blood vessels good. But, when the level of calcium and phosphate increased in the blood, especially in the condition of kidney disease that can harm your body. This condition is known as calcification, which can form in the heart, lungs, blood vessels, and other soft tissue. So, reduce the intake of high phosphate food products to lower the high level of creatinine.
  • Protein – It is a vital substance that helps in maintaining the strength of bones, teeth, and hair. Along with that, it also helps us to get healthy and glowing skin. But, a kidney patient cannot consume much amount of protein because of its side effects. In kidney disorder, a high amount of any protein supplement will put pressure on it. An unused protein can be converted into waste, which causes the problem of protein leakage, high level of creatinine, and urea.
  • Potassium – It is a mineral that is primary for muscle contractions, but a high amount of potassium in the blood can also cause irregular heartbeats.
